INDIANAPOLIS -- The 2013-14 Steward Speakers Series begins Sept. 30 with NCAA President Mark Emmert and will conclude in April with Gen. Colin Powell, former secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is the title sponsor this season. The series, marking its 28th anniversary, is one of the state’s longest-running and most prominent speaker series.

The Sept. 30 event, hosted by the NCAA at its headquarters, 700 W. Washington St., is for Steward Speakers Series, INC’s sponsors and season VIP ticket holders. It will feature dinner and a panel discussion from 6 to 9 p.m. on “The Importance of Inclusion in Intercollegiate Athletics and Higher Education.”

In addition to Emmert and Powell, others panelists include Glenda Ritz, state superintendent of public instruction; James L. Edwards, president of Anderson University; and Shawn Smith, assistant superintendent of secondary education for Pike Township schools.

This season’s series includes attorney Judy Smith, the real-life inspiration behind ABC's hit show "Scandal." Smith has helped celebrities, politicians and major companies with a variety of issues. She will speak at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 at Ivy Tech Community College. Other series speakers are education expert Steve Perry and editor-in-chief emeritus of Essence magazine Susan L. Taylor.
