  • Sept. 21, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANAPOLIS -- Max Weintraub has joined the Herron School of Art and Design as gallery director.

He holds a Ph.D. in art history with a focus on modern and contemporary art from Bryn Mawr College and a master's degree in art history with a focus on medieval European history from North Carolina State University.

His most recent position before coming to Herron was at Hunter College in New York, where he taught modern and contemporary art to graduate and undergraduate students. His curatorial experience includes positions in the education department of the Whitney Museum; management of the Reis Collection, a private holding of more than 200 significant works in New York; and working in the department of painting and sculpture at the Denver Art Museum.

The public's first opportunity to meet Weintraub and get a feel for his curatorial sensibilities will come at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28 with the opening of a two-part exhibition in the Berkshire, Reese and Paul galleries, featuring works by artist Creighton Michael. Weintraub will moderate a discussion with the artist in the Basile Auditorium. A reception will immediately follow the artist's talk.

Michael's work is represented in the permanent collections of top venues such as the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

"Mining the Subjunctive: Explorations in Drawing" will be a drawing-centric exploration of processes related to musical notation, shorthand, calligraphy or digital cryptography.

"Pattern Play" will be a site-specific installation produced in collaboration with Herron students and faculty member Sarah Jones.

The exhibition continues through Nov. 9. The events are free and open to the public. For parking information and gallery hours, visit the Herron Galleries web page.
