For Immediate Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will host the Marion County Regional Spelling Bee on March 12.

Thirty students, third- through eighth-graders, will compete in the contest vying for a trip to represent the county at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in late May. The students were the top finalists from Indianapolis schools competing in three district contests held in Marion County.

In addition to an expenses-paid trip to the national competition, the first-place winner will win a Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.

Registration for the Marion County Regional Spelling Bee will begin at 5:30 p.m. March 12 in the IUPUI Campus Center, followed by a practice round at 6:15 p.m. Then the students will take turns spelling words provided in a guide until a champion is declared.

Veteran WIBC News and Network Indiana reporter Eric Berman will be the pronouncer for the event, which is open to the public.

The regional competition is sponsored by Kroger, IUPUI and the Rotary Club of Indianapolis.
