Lee Hamilton to deliver second annual Birch Bayh Lecture at McKinney School of Law
INDIANAPOLIS -- The second annual Birch Bayh Lecture, sponsored by the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law, features former Congressman Lee Hamilton as speaker.
Hamilton will present "Government: Friend or Foe?" at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Wynne Courtroom of Inlow Hall, 530 W. New York St. A reception will take place following his talk at 6:30 p.m. in the atrium of Inlow Hall.
Hamilton served Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1965 to 1999. He is currently director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University, a nonpartisan educational institution on the IU Bloomington campus that seeks to improve the public's understanding of how government works and to inspire Americans to take an active part in civic life.
"Great democracies do not lurch from doomsday moment to doomsday moment," Hamilton wrote in an online commentary following the end of the recent federal government shutdown. "They plan ahead, they fulfill their responsibilities. Congress must stop resolving one crisis by setting up another a few months down the road."
The Bayh lecture is open to the public and is free of charge, but registration is required. The lecture offers 1.0 hour of Indiana Continuing Legal Education Credit.
The IU McKinney School of Law established the Birch Bayh Lecture Series last year, creating an annual event that focuses on issues of importance to Birch Bayh, a former U.S. senator from Indiana. Bayh's son, former Indiana governor and U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, delivered the inaugural Bayh lecture in October 2012.
