IU dental school professor elected director designate of national oral pathology board

INDIANAPOLIS - A recent election has set Susan Zunt, chair of Indiana University School of Dentistry’s Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology, on a long path that will culminate in her leadership of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

She has been elected the director designate of the board, an eight-year position that starts in October 2013 at a meeting in Tampa, Fla., where she will join the six other specialists who have previously been elected to the board.

The board is charged with the duty of determining certification and re-certification of eligible individuals for oral and maxillofacial pathology practice by examination and credentials maintenance. Oral and maxillofacial pathology is one of nine specialties in the field of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association.

Before Zunt can join her colleagues as a board director, she must first sit for the re-certification examination herself at the Tampa meeting. She will then spend the first year of her service as an observer of the board as she gets thoroughly acquainted with its processes. In the fall of 2014, she will begin six years as an active board member, and in the eighth and final year of the directorship, in 2020, she will serve a one-year term as board president.

A member of the IU dental faculty since 1979, Zunt holds a dental degree from Case Western Reserve University and an IU master’s degree in oral and maxillofacial pathology.

She is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a past president of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Cancer Society’s Great Lakes Division.
