Indiana University to celebrate the naming of Hine Hall at IUPUI on Aug. 8
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana University will celebrate the naming of Hine Hall -- in honor of Dr. Maynard K. Hine, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis’ first chancellor and a true campus visionary -- on Thursday, Aug. 8.
IU President Michael A. McRobbie will lead the ceremony. Additional remarks will be offered by Charles R. Bantz, IUPUI chancellor and IU executive vice president; John N. Williams, IU School of Dentistry dean; L. Jack Windsor, IUPUI Faculty Council president; and Anthony Greco, IUPUI Graduate and Professional Student Government president. Responses will be offered by William C. Hine Sr. and William C. Hine Jr. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

About Dr. Maynard K. Hine
In 1944, Hine joined the IU School of Dentistry as professor and chairman of the Department of Oral Histopathology and Periodontics. The next year, he was appointed dean of the school and served until 1968. During his tenure as dean, he recruited outstanding faculty, and the school excelled in such academic and research programs as clinical dentistry and materials science. In 1968, he began working with Indianapolis Mayor Richard Lugar, IU President Joseph L. Sutton, Purdue President Frederick L. Hovde and other forward-thinking community leaders to establish IUPUI in 1969. That year, Hine was appointed chancellor of the campus, a position he held until 1973.
Hine was a recognized national leader in the field of dentistry, having served as president of the American Dental Association, American Fund for Dental Health, International Association for Dental Research, American Association of Endodontists, American Association of Dental Schools, American Association of Dental Editors, American Academy of Periodontology, Federation Dentaire Internationale and American Academy of the History of Dentistry. He had been a vice president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a chair of its dental section. Hine was a founder diplomat of the American Board of Endodontics and a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology.
About Hine Hall
On April 27, 2012, IUPUI leadership announced that University Place Conference Center and Hotel would be transformed into a multi-use facility designed to meet critical campus needs as expressed by faculty, staff, students and administrators: student housing, residential and campus dining, and additional classroom space. The conversion of the facility began Nov. 30.
Hine Hall, the conference center portion of the facility, opened to students at the start of the 2013 spring semester, Jan. 7, and offers 30,000 square feet with 15 classrooms, academic office space and an existing auditorium.
